I combine my mountain addiction with my wanderlust
and am always looking for new destinations on my doorstep.”

Our Grossarl Bucket List

  • Number 1, of course: a hike with our alpacas!
  • Refreshments at the Loosbühelalm with toboggan run, a fantastic snowshoe hiking area
  • Hike along the Tappenkarsee circuit from/to Hüttschlag with a view of the largest mountain lake in the Alps
  • A gentle e-bike ride to the Aigenalm
  • Herb workshop with our Gretl
  • A virtually private, deserted morning skiing at Skikeriki every Wednesday
  • Our very personal ski tour à la Sellaronda in the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area - we’ll only tell you in person ;)
  • Via ferrata with Berg Gesund
  • Walk along the Trail of the Senses on the Gehwolfalm at 1,686 m with a nature adventure playground
  • Work out and romp around in Rucki Zucki’s Gaudi Mountain pasture adventure playground
  • Hike to the Hüttschlag valley head with its natural floodplain landscape and steep peaks to the Hohe Tauern National Park

In summer, as an Alte Post guest, you can take part in all Berg Gesund activities
such as climbing or yoga hiking for free.
You only have to pay for things like the equipment,
mountain railway, etc.

Holiday in the Valley of the Mountain Pastures
Alpine snack in Grossarl Valley

What does The Valley of the Mountain Pastures mean?

In the mountains of the Grossarl Valley, dairy farmers manage around forty alpine pastures during the summer months. An alpine summer is not a summer retreat like Heidi’s. It is all about hard work, long days, passion, tradition and a love for animals. From May to October, you can rest in the huts and try home-made cheese, farmer’s butter and freshly baked bread.
Guided hikes

Is the hiking good in Grossarl Valley?

For sure! On the one hand, you can plan your tours so that you stop off at an alpine hut and tuck into home-made specialities. On the other hand, if you want, the cable car will take you up a few metres, so that you can hike with great panoramic views at the top. We call it cable car hiking.
Exhilarating summits with the family

Is Grossarl a good travel destination for families with children?

Absolutely, in summer and in winter! In summer, you can show your children how people and animals live in the mountains. Many of the hiking trails, especially those to the alpine pastures, are not that steep and some are even suitable for bicycles and prams! In winter, we have several ski schools that take the little ones under their wing.
Skiing in Ski Amadé
Skiers in Grossarl-Dorfgastein

What do you need to know about the ski resort in Grossarl?

The ski resorts of Grossarl and Dorfgastein are connected by a modern ski circuit. When you have skied all the pistes, you can use the same ticket called Ski Amadé, the largest ski association in Austria, to go to 24 other places and ski endless kilometres of piste there. In the afternoon, you return home to rustic, cosy Grossarl.
Snowshoe hike

Is there anything else to do in winter besides skiing?

Have you ever tried snowshoe hiking? You’ll love trudging through the crackling snow and through forests where time seems to stand still. Just come along on one of our guided tours, we have snowshoes for hire for you. You can also go tobogganing, cross-country skiing on 25 kilometres of ski trails, curling or, ding-a-ling, ride a horse-drawn sleigh!
A pause for breath with a view of Grossarl

What kind of town is Grossarl?

Grossarl is a genuine, lively village, not a cluster of hotels that is left lonely and deserted when the tourists have gone home. Our pace of life may go along a little differently to yours at home ;) But it is a pace of life that is healthy and pleasant! Not too fast, not too slow, just right. We look after each other and maintain our traditions. So please don’t be alarmed when people greet you on the street, that’s still very common here.
Mountain Advent in Grossarl

Salzburg Mountain Advent in Grossarl

Behind it is probably the most heart-warming event of the year, the Christmas market in Grossarl and Hüttschlag, and at the Alte Post, we are right at the heart of the action. In addition to everything that our farmers and craftsmen have made with their own hands, we particularly appreciate the hands-on activities for young and old, for example the biscuit bakery or the Christmas workshop. By the way, you can post letters to Father Christmas with us. We are home to the official Christmas post office in Grossarl ;)
